Knowledge about psychology and healing of colors is probably older than other methods of ancient medicine. Colors and light have been considered a healing tool in virtually all of the world's cultures. Treating diseases by color and restoring imbalance by means of applying color has a long history. From the ancient Egyptians and ancient Greeks who built healing temples of light for therapy to present time when using of light became deeply embedded in modern art and design and it remains an integral part of alternative medicine.
Avicenna (AD 980) advanced the therapy by using colors in both diagnosis and treatment. According to Avicenna, ‘Color is an observable symptom of disease.’ He used color treatment with the view that yellow reduced muscular pain and inflammation. In his Canon of Medicine he made clear the vital importance of color in both diagnosis and treatment. Avicenna, noting that color was an observable symptom of disease, developed a chart which related color to temperament and the physical condition of the body.
The use of light in modern medicine began in the late 1870's when scientists discovered that sunlight killed bacteria. So, Dr. Ghadiali, determined specific feature of the rainbow's colors, i.e., their specific effects on human physiology. Later research has confirmed many of his concepts and spawned evolution of new systems for application of light therapy. Jacob concerns hormonal changes as a result of exposure to sunlight. He found that seven colors of the rainbow are responsible for the release of different kinds of hormones, which keep us healthy.
Edwin D. Babbitt, published in 1878 the book, “The Principals of Light and Color,” where explained that “All vital organs have direct connection with the skin through arteries, blood vessels, and capillaries. Color rays can affect the entire blood stream through circulation and elimination of toxins.” He advanced a comprehensive theory of healing with color. He identified the red color as a stimulant, notably of blood and to a lesser extent to the nerves; yellow and orange as nerve stimulants; blue and violet as soothing to all systems and with anti-inflammatory properties.
In the of 19th - 20th Centuries, therapists became interested in investigation of the light and studied it to see if there is a link between the color effects and the illness of their patients. At this same time, psychologists were discovering emotional meaning of colors.
In 1990, scientists reported to the annual conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science on the successful use of blue light in the treatment of a wide variety of psychological problems, including addictions, eating disorders and depression. At the other end of the color spectrum, red light has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cancer and constipation and in healing wounds. As a result, color is becoming widely accepted as a therapeutic tool with various medical applications. Apply in the need color energies to the physical organs results in a healed body. Color Medicine is truly, the medicine of the future.
